In another context, the Delhi government has extended the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana for the fifth phase, which was initially launched in 2020 in response to the Covid pandemic. The scheme offers 5 kg of free ration per person every month, and the Delhi government has requested the central government to extend it to all states. The extension was made due to the pandemic’s impact on unemployment and to continue supporting those affected.
However, the proposal to continue the scheme has been declined by Sudhanshu Pandey, Secretary of the Department of Fertilizers and Public Distribution. This decision was based on the positive developments in the economy under the OMSS policy and the successful management of fertilizer subsidies in the open market.
The scheme is extended up to till september 2024.
